Our History
XD Design began with one idea. That travel should feel smarter, safer and more sustainable. In April 2016, we launched our first anti-theft backpack on Kickstarter. It was more than a product launch. It was the start of a new way of thinking about everyday travel.
Rooted in Dutch design values, we set out to challenge traditional travel gear by combining functionality with a clean, minimalist aesthetic. The success of that first campaign sparked a global movement. From a single idea, we grew into a design brand trusted by people around the world.
As our collection expanded, we stayed true to our purpose. Every product is shaped by the realities of modern life. Lightweight yet strong. Secure yet stylish. Technical yet easy to use. With every step forward, we aim to do better. Smarter design. Lower impact. Higher standards.
Today, our backpacks travel the world with people who care about how things are made. We’re proud of where we started and even more excited about where we’re going. The journey continues, designed with purpose.
How it started
In April 2016 we brought our first backpack to life via Kickstarter. The Bobby Original campaign began with one bold promise that travel gear could be smarter and safer by design. The campaign quickly gained momentum with more than 25 000 backers worldwide investing over 2 million USD in what would become a global movement. That early community support validated our vision and set the stage for XD Design to grow beyond a single idea into a trusted brand of innovative travel gear rooted in Dutch design.
2016
Launch of the Bobby Original
In April 2016 we launched the Bobby Original anti-theft backpack on Kickstarter. Within the first 24 hours, over 500 backers joined the campaign. It went on to raise more than 700 000 euros from over 10 000 backers, far surpassing the original goal of 20 000 euros. This success marked the beginning of XD Design and proved that there was a real need for smarter, safer travel gear.
2017
Launch of the Bobby Bizz
In 2017 we introduced the Bobby Bizz through Kickstarter. This hybrid between a backpack and a briefcase was designed for professionals on the move. Within 24 hours the campaign had already doubled its original goal. It went on to raise over 300 000 euros from more than 4 000 backers. The Bobby Bizz expanded our product line into business travel while staying true to our values of smart security, functional design.
2018
Launch of the Urban Lite
In 2018 we introduced the Urban Lite on Kickstarter, a backpack built for secure and flexible travel. It marked the debut of our steel reinforced combination lock, integrated into a roll-top closure that allows the bag to be safely locked around fixed objects. The campaign raised over 200 000 euros from more than 2 500 backers. The Urban Lite showed that lightweight design and serious security can go hand in hand.
2020
Launch of the Flex Gym Bag and Flex Foldable Trolley
In 2020, we launched two Kickstarter travel solutions: the Flex Gym Bag, with a fold-out compartment expanding capacity from 16 to 24 litres, and the Flex Foldable Trolley, a lightweight, collapsible option for short trips. Both used RPET materials and featured anti-theft designs, combining flexibility, security, and sustainability.
2022
Introducing AWARE: Transparent Tracking of Sustainability
AWARE is a smarter way to trace sustainability. With a simple scan, you can instantly verify the recycled content and impact of your XD Design product.
We believe sustainability should be proven, not just promised. That is why we use AWARE tracking technology to confirm the origin of recycled materials. Each QR code links to a digital passport with verified data about content, type and environmental benefit.
2023
Launch of the Soft Daypack
In 2023 we launched the Soft Daypack, designed for light daily use without compromising on security. It features a clean and flexible silhouette made from recycled materials, combined with lockable zipper pullers and a soft padded interior. With a compact 8 liter volume, it’s ideal for short commutes and city walks. The Soft Daypack reflects a move toward simplified, low-impact design made for everyday freedom.
2024
Launch of the Bobby Edge
Meet the Bobby Edge backpack, the ideal companion for life in the city. Launched in 2024, it blends smart anti-theft features, ergonomic comfort and a water-repellent exterior made with recycled materials. Its lockable zippers, structured silhouette and premium finishes provide both style and security. Built for urban explorers, the Bobby Edge delivers performance, protection and sustainability in one sleek design.
2025
Launch of the new Urban line
In 2025 we introduced a new generation of Urban bags designed for dynamic city life. The collection includes three models: the Urban Backpack, the Urban Flap-top and the Urban Expandable Sling. Each design features water-repellent materials, lockable zippers and thoughtful compartments to keep belongings secure and organized. With sleek lines and recycled fabrics, the new Urban line blends everyday practicality with the confidence of smart protection.
2025
Launch of the Soft Tote Backpack
In 2025, we launched the Soft Tote Backpack, a stylish and versatile daily companion. Its Shape Shift Zipper expands to reveal two styles, blending flexibility with a minimalist look. Made from recycled materials and featuring a Twist Lock Zipper Pull for anti-theft protection, it’s built for work, study or leisure.
